When asked a question, the chatbot will respond based on its current knowledge database. If the conversation introduces a concept that it isn’t programmed to understand, the chatbot can state it doesn’t understand the question — or pass the communication to a human operator. ChatGPT currently provides access to GPT-3.5 and limited access to the GPT-4o language model. GPT-4 can handle more complex tasks compared to GPT-3.5, such as describing photos, generating captions for images and creating more detailed responses up to 25,000 words. ChatGPT is a form of generative AI — a tool that lets users enter prompts to receive humanlike images, text or videos that are created by AI.

The platform has gained significant popularity and widespread adoption for providing a comprehensive framework for building and deploying various types of machine learning models. The last time we reported on AI chatbot jailbreaking, some enterprising researchers from NTU were working on Masterkey, an automated method of using the power of one LLM to jailbreak another. To best understand ArtPrompt and how it works, it is probably simplest to check out the two examples provided by the research team behind the tool. In Figure 1 above, you can see that ArtPrompt easily sidesteps the protections of contemporary LLMs. The tool replaces the ‘safety word’ with an ASCII art representation of the word to form a new prompt.
